Brandon Aiyuk, Commanders Talks Reportedly 'Off the Track' in Latest Rumors on 49ers WR

San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk is hoping to be released by his current team to sign with another team this offseason, but one potential suitor might be off the table.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reported on the Pat McAfee Show that talks between Aiyk and the Washington Commanders are "off the track."

"I think that was on the track to happening, and then it went off the track," Schefter said (5:55 mark). "That doesn't mean it can't get back on the track, but I think there are people who wonder whether or not he wants to play."

Aiyuk is still technically on the 49ers' roster, though he hasn't played a game for them since October of 2024. General manager John Lynch also said in January that "it's safe to say he's played his last game as a Niner."

Aiyuk has spent most of the offseason dissing the 49ers on social media, though he's also made it clear through the countless posts that he wants to join the Commanders once he's released.

But he seemingly hurt his chances of joining Washington earlier this month when he took a shot at starting quarterback Jayden Daniels on social media.

Despite his comments towards Daniels, Aiyuk told The Athletic's Matt Barrows and Nicki Jhabvala that he's the "final piece" of the Commanders' roster "that will swing all the odds in our favor."

But even if Aiyuk still has plans of joining the Commanders, there has been no indication that Washington feels as strongly as him.

In fact, Aiyuk could have a hard time landing on any roster this offseason. ESPN's Jeremy Fowler reported earlier this month that the wide receiver has hurt his chances of finding a landing spot due to his social media activity.

"He continues to nuke his job prospects at this point," Fowler said. "I've talked to several teams about Brandon Aiyuk, trying to give him the benefit of the doubt. Is there any sort of sound strategy he's employing here? And they can't think of anything other than this is just sort of insensible."

At his best, Aiyuk is an All-Pro-level receiver capable of helping a team make a deep playoff run. But his behavior on social media, plus the fact that he hasn't played in a year and a half, has severely damaged his reputation.
