Kyle Shanahan Attends 49ers Training Camp After Being Injured in Car Crash

One day after it was revealed San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan was in a car crash earlier this month, he was on the field for a portion of their first training camp practice.

The Athletic's Matt Barrows noted Shanahan was on the field next to general manager John Lynch for the team period of Sunday's practice.

Barrows added that Shanahan was on the field for just over 30 minutes and was greeted by a few players, including Kyle Juszczyk, Fred Warner, Dre Greenlaw.

The 49ers announced on Saturday, which was the date for veterans to report to camp, that Shanahan suffered "non-life-threatening injuries" in a car crash. His role in camp will be "limited" for the time being as he recovers.

Per ESPN's Adam Schefter and Nick Wagoner, the crash occurred near Shanahan's home on July 14 when his vehicle collided with an SUV. The report added he suffered a broken nose, three broken ribs, a broken hand, required more than 40 stitches in his face and was diagnosed with a concussion.

Lynch said Shanahan will essentially be placed in a concussion protocol that he must clear before he can resume full coaching responsibilities again, but the team is not "anticipating" the situation impacting his ability to coach in Week 1 of the regular season.

Until Shanahan can get back to coaching full-time, Chris Foerster is serving as acting head coach. The 64-year-old Foerster is entering his eighth season on San Francisco's staff. He has been an assistant head coach and offensive line coach since the start of last season.

The 49ers' first preseason game is at Levi's Stadium against the Tennessee Titans on Aug. 13. They will open the regular season on Sept. 10 against the Los Angeles Rams in Melbourne, Australia.
