49ers' Kyle Shanahan Injured in Car Crash, Will Have 'Limited' Role to Start Training Camp

San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan suffered non-life-threatening injuries after a car accident in mid-July, the team announced on social media on Saturday.

Shanahan will be in a "limited" role as the team starts training camp, and assistant head coach Chris Foerster and the Niners' coordinators will handle head coach responsibilities in the meantime.

According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, Shanahan was driving near his home in northern California when he collided with an SUV. He suffered a broken nose, three broken ribs, a broken hand and a severe concussion. He also needed over 40 stitches in his face.

Schefter added that Shanahan was taken to the local hospital by local paramedics, and he spent most of the day there before being released. The other driver was not injured, and drugs and alcohol were not involved for either driver. Neither Shanahan nor the other driver was cited for the collision.

Shanahan has spent the last few weeks recovering at home and "is believed to be healing well," according to Schefter. Given that he suffered a concussion, Shanahan will not be cleared to return to team activities until his symptoms clear.

The 49ers begin their 2026 training camp on Sunday morning.

Shanahan, 46, is entering his 10th season as San Francisco's head coach, tying him with Bill Walsh for the longest tenure for a 49ers head coach. He can move to second on the franchise's all-time wins list by winning 11 games this year.

The Niners are coming off a solid season in which they finished 12-5 and reached the divisional round of the playoffs. Shanahan, who has reached two Super Bowls during his tenure, will look to win his first in San Francisco this year.
