New Cowboys Rumors Reveal 'High' Brendan Sorsby Interest as Potential Dak Prescott Backup

Before the NFL declined to hold a supplemental draft this year, the Dallas Cowboys were keeping an eye on Brendan Sorsby as a potential developmental quarterback with Dak Prescott under contract through the 2028 season.

Per ESPN's Todd Archer, the Cowboys had "high interest" in Sorsby as a short-term backup option and a potential long-term starter with Prescott entering his mid-30s.

Amid the controversy over his college eligibility stemming from his admission to betting on college and pro sports dating back to his freshman year at Indiana, Sorsby planned to enter the NFL this season by applying for the supplemental draft.

However, on June 23, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported the NFL informed Sorbsy and its 32 teams that it wouldn't be holding a supplemental draft this year.

Since Sorsby no longer has college eligibility remaining, his options to play football in 2026 are now quite limited. The CFL has announced he is ineligible to sign with one of their teams.

The UFL could be an option for Sorsby after Mike Repole, one of the league's co-owners, posted on X the Texas Tech star would be "welcome" to sign with one of their teams.

Since the UFL season takes place in the spring, the 2026 campaign has already ended, so Sorsby would have to wait until next year when he will also be eligible for the NFL draft.

Given that the Cowboys already had some level of interest in Sorsby this year, it would stand to reason they could maintain it into next spring during the 2027 draft.

Per ESPN's Matt Miller, multiple NFL scouts believed Sorsby would have been a high first-round pick in 2026 if he had been eligible.

The market for quarterbacks is always strong, so someone with Sorsby's talent would figure to get a shot in the NFL.

Prescott is entrenched as the Cowboys starter right now, but he will be finishing his age-35 season when his current contract expires.

Sorsby will likely need a long developmental window if he doesn't play competitive football in 2026, so a team like the Cowboys that can work with him behind the scenes before throwing him on the field would make for an ideal landing spot if it does come to pass.
