Jacoby Brissett Contract Talks, Training Camp Status Updated By Cardinals' Mike LaFleur Amid Rumors

Jacoby Brissett is eyeing a new contract this offseason, and Arizona Cardinals head coach Mike LaFleur gave an update on where things stand between the team and the quarterback on Thursday.

"It's been productive between us and his team," LaFleur told reporters. "Still ongoing but I'd say the word productive."

ESPN's Josh Weinfuss reported in June that Brissett was eyeing a potential holdout in hopes of getting a reworked contract that would pay him a more appropriate salary for a starting quarterback.

Brissett seemingly isn't going to conduct a holdout, at least at the moment, as he reported to training camp on Wednesday and was also at practice on Thursday.

Brissett's two-year, $12.5 million deal will pay him a $4.8 million salary with $1.5 million in guarantees this year. His salary ranks 32nd among quarterbacks and the team's backup, Gardner Minshew, will make more than him in guarantees this year.

It's easy to see where Brissett is coming from, especially considering he just had the best season of his career. Starting most of the season, Brissett threw for 3,366 yards, 23 touchdowns and eight interceptions in 14 games. He had a 452-yard, two-touchdown game against the San Francisco 49ers and threw for more than 300 yards four times.

But the Cardinals, understandably, are likely viewing Brissett's contract situation through a different lens.

Brissett will be 34 years old at the end of the season and isn't a long-term option for the rebuilding squad. Giving him a big, multiyear contract doesn't make sense considering the Cardinals will likely try to draft his replacement in the spring.

Still, Arizona is rich in cap space and could surely offer Brissett more than what he's currently set to make. If the Cardinals aren't willing to do so, it wouldn't be surprising to see Brissett revisit the idea of a holdout.
