Cowboys Begin to Remove Grass Field from AT&T Stadium in New Videos After Hosting World Cup Matches

Zach BacharJul 16, 2026

The Dallas Cowboys started the process of removing the natural grass that was used for the 2026 FIFA World Cup at AT&T Stadium on Thursday.

Gillette Stadium, which is typically home to the New England Patriots, also removed the natural grass surface that was installed for the World Cup.

Both AT&T Stadium and Gillette Stadium will return to artificial turf for the 2026 NFL season.

AT&T Stadium hosted nine World Cup matches during the tournament, as FIFA requires venues to use natural grass for the event.

Several NFL players have expressed a desire to play on grass fields once again, including San Francisco 49ers tight end George Kittle. On June 25, the NFL Players Association released a statement advocating for natural grass on Kittle's behalf.

Still, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones hasn't considered changing AT&T Stadium's artificial turf for NFL games.

"No, we have more flexibility with the way we handle our surface at the stadium. We have no belief that it's any safer to play on a grass [field] or a turf. We are ambiguous as to the safety of it," Jones said earlier this year, per ESPN's Jordan Raanan. "The turf, actually like many things, improves the economics of being able to play this game and our players are the biggest benefactor of all. They get the best benefit of when we do good things financially, the players are benefiting. So I'm working for you, baby, OK, if you're a player.

"And so the combination of that, I'm very comfortable putting some grass down for soccer under regulations and proud to be able to do it but quickly get that turf back out there to go about the other business of the stadium and the team."

Dallas' training camp ahead of the 2026 season is set to begin on July 27.
