Red Sox's Sonny Gray 'Selfishly' Reacts to Snub from MLB All-Star Game 2026 Voting Results

Scott PolacekJul 5, 2026

Sonny Gray looked every bit the part of an All-Star during Saturday's win over the Los Angeles Angels, and the Boston Red Sox starter admitted in the aftermath he was "selfishly" disappointed he was not selected for this year's Midsummer Classic.

"I was disappointed, a little bummed, for sure," Gray said while also congratulating teammates Aroldis Chapman and Ranger Suarez for their selections, per Mike DiGiovanna of the Associated Press.

"I'm just being honest, you know? I'm happy for Ranger, and I'm happy for Chappy, for sure. They're very well-deserving. But a little selfishly, yeah, I was disappointed."

On Saturday, MLB revealed the All-Stars, and the right-hander was not among the 12 American League pitchers who were selected.

Perhaps he used that for a little motivation Saturday, as he allowed a single earned run and four hits while striking out seven in six innings of work during Boston's 8-1 win.

It was more of the same for the veteran, who now has a 2.61 ERA, 1.10 WHIP and 82 strikeouts in 89.2 innings this season. He has been even better of late with six straight quality starts, including one in which he took a no-hitter into the eighth inning against the New York Yankees, and a 1.97 ERA during that span.

His 2.61 ERA is the second-best in the American League, but even that wasn't enough to land an All-Star spot.

Perhaps it will come down the line if there are roster changes because of injuries and replacements.

"When the All-Star Game happens, there's so much roster fluctuation—it happens every year with pitchers who can't go, people are hurt, people back out," Red Sox interim manager Chad Tracy said. "Things happen, so I'm still holding out hope for a couple more guys on the team who I feel are deserving."

Gray has three All-Star selections on his resume from when he was with the Athletics, Cincinnati Reds and Minnesota Twins, but he is pitching some of the best baseball of his career in his age-36 season and wanted to be rewarded accordingly with another nod.
