Kvitova Will Compete in Rogers Open Despite Mono Diagnosis
Monday, Aug. 10
Kvitova told WTATennis.com she has been suffering from mononucleosis for at least the past month.
"I had a sore throat and I wanted to kill it so I had antibiotics after Wimbledon," she said. "Unfortunately I didn't kill it and that's why it showed my immune system was low. So I had more tests and it showed up."
Kvitova missed the Miami Open, BNP Paribas Open and Aegon International this year for health reasons, so her mono diagnosis helps explain in part why she wasn't feeling her normal self in the spring and early summer.
On Twitter, she was relieved to at least know the root of the issue:
The 25-year-old Czech still plans to compete in the Rogers Open. She has a bye in the first round, so she'll have a little extra time to try to shake off some of the effects of mono.
The important thing for Kvitova is getting back to 100 percent for the U.S. Open, which begins Aug. 31. It's the only major tournament in which she has failed to reach the quarterfinal, so she'll be looking for a good result at Flushing Meadows.
