Sophie Cunningham Talks Viral Pointing Video Meme After Caitlin Clark Exchange in Fever-Mercury

Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham discussed the viral video of her pointing during a verbal exchange that involved Phoenix Mercury forward DeWanna Bonner and Fever teammate Caitlin Clark in a recent matchup between the two teams.

Cunningham explained that the incident started when she was asking an official why Clark received a technical foul and Bonner wasn't given one after they got tied up earlier in the game.

"I was just kind of pointing, and she's like, 'Don't you point at me.' I was like, 'Oh, shouldn't have said that.' And I didn't say a word," Cunningham said on her Show Me Something podcast (0:22 mark).

"So stupid, that is the stupidest thing I've ever done," she added. "I'm telling you, everyone's like, 'That is so dumb.' I think it's dumb, but it was pissing her off and I couldn't help myself. I could not. She was losing her s--t, and all I was doing was literally pointing."

Officials later reviewed the altercation and handed out five technical fouls.

Bonner, Clark, Cunningham, Mercury star Alyssa Thomas and Fever forward Myisha Hines-Allen were all given technicals for their roles in the exchange.

Still, Cunningham's point in the direction of Bonner generated plenty of attention on social media.

Cunningham and Bonner have some shared history, as they were briefly teammates on the Fever in 2025.

Bonner appeared in nine games for Indiana last season, but eventually left the team to sign with Phoenix.

Cunningham didn't seem to appreciate the way her exit unfolded.

"It's okay to be professional about it," Cunningham said regarding Bonner in 2025, via SI.com's Matthew Graham. "And like, send a text to your teammates. Send a text, and be like, 'Love you, guys.' Or you don't even have to say 'Love you, guys.' Just like, 'Hey, sorry this didn't work out.' Good luck... There's a way to do that."

Indiana ended up defeating Phoenix by the final score of 86-77 on Monday, as the Fever currently sit at 10-8 on the season.

Cunningham has been a key contributor off the bench in 2026, averaging 9.6 points and 2.6 rebounds per game while connecting on 49.1 percent of her field goals and 40.8 percent of her triples.
