Brandon Aiyuk Calls Out 49ers and Former Agent in New Video amid Push for Commanders Contract
Brandon Aiyuk continued his public campaign to be released by the San Francisco 49ers by sharing a new video on Saturday.
The veteran pass-catcher uploaded a video to YouTube on Saturday in which he said he never plans to set foot at the 49ers' facility again with the possible exception of Oct. 19, when they host the Washington Commanders.
Aiyuk added that his agent, Ryan Williams, is "a source of the problems between himself and the 49ers," per ESPN.com.
Aiyuk claimed Friday he no longer has an agent officially representing him, purportedly severing ties with Williams last November. Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio reported, however, that Williams is still listed as Aiyuk's agent in the NFLPA database.
This is merely the latest twist in the ongoing saga, one perpetuated by the player himself.
Aiyuk technically remains on San Francisco's roster, but that's basically a formality. The signs all point to the team releasing him at some point.
The 28-year-old is clearly aiming to land on his feet with the Commanders.
That's a two-way street, though. The interest needs to be mutual, and Washington's coaches and front office could be getting reservations about whether signing Aiyuk is worth it.
The 2020 first-round pick hasn't played since October 2024 due to a torn ACL and MCL, and things have only devolved since then.
ESPN's Jeremy Fowler asserted that Aiyuk is "lighting money on fire" with his online posting. Some around the NFL believe he may have to settle for the veteran's minimum once the Niners cut him and make him a free agent:
There's a reason Aiyuk originally got $120 million from the 49ers. He had back-to-back 1,000-yard receiving seasons in 2022 and 2023, hauling in 15 touchdown grabs and averaging 15.4 yards per reception during that period.
The knee injuries raise questions about how Aiyuk will perform once he's back on the field, and he has recently provided the kind of off-field distractions teams typically like to avoid.
He's not doing himself any favors in terms of an inevitable post-Niners future.
