Carlos Mendoza's Top Potential MLB Landing Spots After Mets Firing
Less than two months after receiving a vote of confidence from the front office, Carlos Mendoza's tenure as manager of the New York Mets came to an end on Friday.
Amid a 34-47 start to the season, the Mets announced Mendoza has been fired and Andy Green will serve as interim manager for the remainder of the year.
Originally hired in November 2023, Mendoza's first season was a dream that saw the team go 65-40 over its final 105 games to make the playoffs. They advanced to the NLCS before losing to the Los Angeles Dodgers in six games.
The Mets have gone 117-126 since the start of the 2025 season and they currently sit in last place in the NL East.
Mendoza's overall tenure in Queens ends with a 206-199 record and one playoff appearance.
With the Mets now in his rear-view mirror, here are some potential landing spots for Mendoza in the future.
New York Yankees
1 of 3
The safest bet for Mendoza is landing a job with the New York Yankees.
In addition to proximity to his most recent job, Mendoza has a long history with the Yankees. He originally joined the organization in 2009 as a coach for the Staten Island Yankees.
Mendoza gradually worked his way up through the minors, including one season as manager of the Charleston RiverDogs in 2012.
After spending five seasons as a roving instructor for the Yankees, Mendoza was hired by Aaron Boone prior to the 2018 season as the infield coach for the MLB team.
Mendoza took over as bench coach prior to the 2020 campaign. He remained in that role for four seasons prior to being hired by the Mets.
Given Mendoza's familiarity with the organization and established relationship with Boone, it wouldn't be a surprise to see him return to the Bronx in a role at some point.
Boston Red Sox
2 of 3
This one is a bit of a troll because the Red Sox have been such a mess this season that perhaps their path back to success is by finding someone who is familiar with the Yankees' operation.
But there's also an argument for the Red Sox to hire a manager who has an extensive history of player development, which Mendoza spent nearly a full decade doing with the Yankees before being added to the MLB staff.
The Red Sox seem likely to sell off some of their veteran players prior to the Aug. 3 trade deadline. Some of their current core group is still young players, like Roman Anthony, Connelly Early and Payton Tolle.
Top prospects like Franklin Arias and Anthony Eyanson figure to be playing in Boston in 2027.
It would certainly be a hard sell for an already-angry fanbase to get on board with hiring a new manager who was just fired by the Mets, but Mendoza could be better suited to handle a rebuilding situation than the environment he had in Queens.
San Francisco Giants
3 of 3
This one requires an assumption that Tony Vitello is probably not long to be the manager of the San Francisco Giants. It's not an unreasonable assumption for a team that is currently 33-47.
There are many reasons the Giants find themselves in a fight with the Colorado Rockies for the worst record in MLB right now, but Vitello has certainly looked to be in over his head after his surprise hiring last October despite having never played or worked in professional baseball.
Despite all of the problems for the Giants at this point, there are reasons they could appeal to managerial candidates if the job comes open after this season.
One is because ownership has shown a willingness to invest in the roster. Rafael Devers' contract looks like an albatross right now, but you can understand why the Giants took the swing on him last year when the Red Sox wanted to move on.
The Giants' tax payroll this season ranks 11th in MLB with $231.5 million on the books.
Another reason the job could appeal to someone like Mendoza is the Giants have a promising farm system, though it's built more on quality depth than star power at this point.
The biggest drawback to working in the NL West is you have to compete against the Los Angeles Dodgers every year, but the Giants are the only other team that has won the division in the last 13 years when they won 107 games in 2021.
