Marina Mabrey Ties A'ja Wilson's WNBA Scoring Record, Box Score Stats for Tempo Star's Historic Game

Joseph ZuckerJun 25, 2026

Toronto Tempo guard Marina Mabrey wrote her name into the WNBA record books with a 53-point performance in a 125-97 win over the Los Angeles Sparks on Thursday.

That ties the mark set by A'ja Wilson and Liz Cambage.

With respect to Wilson and Cambage, the nature of Mabrey's offense helps set her apart somewhat.

When Wilson dropped 53 on the Atlanta Dream in 2023, 20 of her points came from the charity stripe. She also attempted just one shot beyond the arc. Cambage similarly operated around the basket and got to the foul line 16 times.

Along with her points output, Mabrey matched the single-game record for made threes with nine, having already hit that number less than a week ago. She was scoring efficiently and from everywhere on the court.

The 29-year-old is simultaneously an unlikely and very likely candidate to achieve this feat.

Mabrey isn't an All-Star and her career scoring average (12.9) is fairly pedestrian. In general, nobody would consider her an elite offensive player.

But she has never lacked for confidence and possesses the ability to go supernova for stretches. Playing for an expansion franchise has also provided her with the biggest green light to shoot she has ever received.

And on Thursday, Toronto was missing leading scorer Brittney Sykes against one of the WNBA's worst defenses. The ingredients were all there for Mabrey to have a night to remember.

On the other side, this was an ominous start to life without Kelsey Plum for the time being for Los Angeles. The four-time All-Star will miss at least four weeks because of a lower-leg injury.

The Sparks' porous defense has been a problem all year. Now, they don't have Plum's scoring to help them keep pace with opposing teams.

By the time she's back, Los Angeles may have lost valuable ground in the playoff race on the basis of what unfolded against Toronto.
