New Tarik Skubal Trade Rumors on Mariners' Interest as Insider Examines Dodgers, Yankees and More

Adam WellsJun 19, 2026

As the market for Tarik Skubal figures to heat up with the Detroit Tigers falling further down the AL standings, the reigning AL West champs don't appear like they will be in the mix to acquire the left-handed ace.

Per The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal, the Seattle Mariners aren't expected to pursue Skubal in part because they currently utilize a six-man rotation and could improve internally with Kade Anderson dominating in Double-A right now.

Anderson, the No. 3 pick in the 2025 draft, has a 1.13 ERA with 82 strikeouts in 55.2 innings over his first 11 starts this season.

Rosenthal noted Seattle's pitching depth could be enticing for the Tigers, but the Mariners think it would make "little sense" to give up someone like Logan Gilbert or George Kirby when they have multiple years of team control remaining.

Two teams Rosenthal suggested might not have that strong of an interest are the Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Yankees, in part because both teams will get impact pitchers back from the injured list.

New York currently owns the best record in the AL at 45-28 despite Aaron Judge and Max Fried both on the IL. Fried could return at some point in July as he continues to rehab from a bone bruise in his left elbow.

The Dodgers also "hate overpaying" for players at the trade deadline. Blake Snell started his throwing program earlier this month after having elbow surgery to remove loose bodies in May. Closer Edwin Díaz remains on track to return after the All-Star break.

Tyler Glasnow is the main concern among the injured Dodgers pitchers at this point. He was transferred to the 60-day IL on June 6 due to a back injury that has prevented him from starting a throwing program.

One team that could enter the mix is the Atlanta Braves due to their pitching issues.

Spencer Strider was transferred to the 60-day injured list on Wednesday due to inflammation in his right elbow. He joins Spencer Schwellenbach, AJ Smith-Shawver and Joey Wentz among Braves starters on the IL.

Reynaldo López has been pitching primarily out of the bullpen coming off shoulder surgery last year that limited him to one start.

Even though the Braves' farm system was regarded as one of the worst in MLB entering this season, Rosenthal noted team officials believe it's being underrated and will get a boost in the draft next month.

Despite all of the injuries piling up for the Braves, they have built up a seven-game lead over the Philadelphia Phillies in the NL East.

Skubal could end up being the biggest difference-maker for the stretch run and postseason if the Tigers decide to move him. He returned to the mound on June 13, throwing 4.2 innings against the Cleveland Guardians after missing six weeks due to elbow surgery.

The 29-year-old is set to become a free agent at the end of this season, but the Tigers don't look like a playoff contender right now with a 30-44 record.

In eight starts this season, Skubal has a 2.81 ERA with 49 strikeouts over 48.0 innings.
