Biglia Move Nears as Lazio and United Negotiate Deal

Monday, August 10

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, cited by French outlet Le 10 Sport (h/t Sean Kearns of Metro), the 29-year-old has agreed to sign a four-year deal with the Red Devils.

The report states Lazio and United now need to agree a fee, with the Manchester outfit having had an initial £17 million bid rejected as the Biancocelesti hold out for closer to £28.3 million.

That seems like a lot of money for a player who United arguably don't even need.

Far from filling one of the areas in which United are weak—up front and in central defence—Biglia plays in a similar role to current Red Devils Bastian Schweinsteiger, Morgan Schneiderlin, Michael Carrick and Daley Blind.

As football writer Graham Ruthven notes, United boss Louis van Gaal looks to be going slightly overboard on central midfielders:

An Argentina international, Biglia is a useful player with terrific defensive attributes and a fine range of passing. Perhaps Van Gaal views him as a potential centre-back option.

If not, it would be better to spend the prospective transfer fee for Biglia on a high-quality leader in defence, as United's back four still appears to be vulnerable.

Van Gaal recently admitted his defensive options were somewhat lopsided, and a new centre-back may still be forthcoming, per Rob Dawson of the Manchester Evening News (via the Daily Mirror): "We have three (right-sided) centre backs, we have Smalling, Jones and McNair, but if he is much better than them then it is possible. We go for the best players and it has to be possible."

If recent reports are to be believed, Biglia will be the next man in at Old Trafford, although Lazio's high valuation of him may yet put off Van Gaal.
