Hill, 30, has played seven MLB seasons for the Detroit Tigers, Washington Nationals, Texas Rangers, San Francisco Giants, Miami Marlins and White Sox.
This season, Hill has played 50 games, hitting .213 (.659 OPS) with four home runs and eight RBI.
Matt Gelb of The Athletic provided more information on the trade, which occurred one day after Phillies right fielder Adolis García suffered a right shoulder injury while making a throw home during his team's 7-4 road win over the Toronto Blue Jaye.
"Hill, according to sources, is expected to play center field and right field against left-handed pitchers. Sources indicated the Phillies had been in talks with Chicago about Hill before Adolis García's right shoulder injury, suffered on Wednesday against the Toronto Blue Jays, and it remains unclear how much time García will miss."
Regarding the prospects going Chicago's way, 23-year-old outfielder Dylan Campbell has played for Double-A Reading this year. In 55 games, Campbell has hit .216 (.693 OPS) with seven home runs and 31 RBI.
Jose Colmenares is a 24-year-old who can play second base, shortstop and third base. He's played for the High-A Jersey Shore BlueClaws this year, hitting .278 (.815 OPS) with three home runs and 19 RBI in 36 games.
A source also told Gelb that Philadelphia is receiving $250,000 in international bonus pool money.
