New Sean Payton Contract Revealed by Broncos After AFC Championship Game Appearance

Despite having two years remaining on his original contract with the Denver Broncos, Sean Payton has agreed to a new deal that will tie him to the club through the 2030 season.

Payton and the Broncos agreed to terms on a new five-year contract extension after their appearance in the AFC Championship Game last season.

ESPN's Adam Schefter first reported the news.

The new deal for Payton lines up his contract with that of general manager George Paton, who signed a five-year extension in May.

Payton originally signed a five-year contract when he was hired by the Broncos in February 2023. It marked his return to the sidelines after a one-year sabbatical following his retirement from the New Orleans Saints after the 2021 season.

Since the Saints controlled Payton's rights at that point, the Broncos traded a 2023 first-round draft pick and a 2024 second-round pick to New Orleans to release him from his contract.

Denver was looking to make a big splash with its coaching hire after the disastrous 2022 season that saw Nathaniel Hackett get fired 15 games into his tenure after a 4-11 start.

The Broncos finished 2022 with a 5-12 record, their sixth consecutive losing season and seventh consecutive year missing the playoffs after a victory in Super Bowl 50.

Payton helped stabilize things in Denver with an 8-9 record in his first season, but the full fruits of his efforts really took hold in 2024.

The Broncos have gone 24-10 and made the playoffs in each of the last two seasons, including an appearance in the AFC Championship Game during the 2025 campaign. Their 14 wins last season tied a franchise single-season record, and they won the AFC West for the first time since 2015.
