Atlanta took a 5-4 lead in the top of the 10th inning, and the White Sox were down to their final out when Montgomery stepped up to the plate. After watching the first pitch, he blasted the changup to left field to score two runs and give Chicago the win.
"Put a good swing on it and the rest was history," Montgomery said. "That was how we drew it up. I still don't know what to say. That was unreal."
Montgomery was called up to the majors on Tuesday after outstanding play in Double-A and Triple-A this season. He struck out in his first professional at-bat, but he hit an RBI single in the fourth inning for his first MLB hit.
Montgomery, who played college baseball at Stanford and Texas A&M, was drafted by the Boston Red Sox with the 12th overall pick in 2024. He was traded to Chicago along with a handful of other prospects in return for pitcher Garrett Crochet ahead of the 2025 season.
Montgomery is considered to be the No. 21 overall prospect by MLB.com, and he is the No. 2 prospect in the White Sox organization, only behind infielder Caleb Bonemer.
