Shnaider was coming off a monumental upset win over top-ranked Aryna Sabalenka on Wednesday. However, from the start of Thursday's semifinal, it was clear that she and Chwalinska were evenly matched. They went back and forth in the first set, even trading break points in one instance.

Chwalinska took a 6-5 lead after a marathon point that saw her stave off two breaks, but Shnaider held serve on her next point to force the tiebreaker. However, Shnaider lost serve four times on her way to dropping the tiebreaker 7-4.

Both players opened the second set by trading break points once again before eventually finding their footing and holding serve. Shnaider called a medical timeout after taking a 4-3 lead and had a trainer examine her back, but she continued the match. Unfortunately for her, Chwalinska smelled blood in the water, and she easily tied things up before earning a pivotal break for a 5-4 lead. She easily earned the match point to advance to the final on Saturday.

This marks the first time in French Open history that a player went from the qualifying round to the final. The only other time that happened in a major was when Emma Raducanu won the 2021 US Open. Chwalinska is playing in just her third career Grand Slam, making her the second-fastest player ever to reach a major final behind Raducanu.

Andreeva, who is also playing in her first career major final, defeated No. 15 Marta Kostyuk 6-1, 6-3 in Thursday's other semifinal.

Saturday's French Open final will officially crown a new champion, with Chwalinska and Andreeva on the verge of etching one of their names in history.
