Tom Brady Called Out for 'Bulls--t Take' by Longtime Lions OL Dan Skipper
Former NFL quarterback Tom Brady claimed this week that most practice squad players stayed at the level because they couldn't handle the pressure of being a full-time starter, or in some cases didn't even want to be elevated to the active roster.
Retired offensive lineman Dan Skipper had his own thoughts on Brady's take:
Brady was obviously drawing some pretty wide conclusions with his remarks, which other folks pointed out:
The ability to perform at your highest level in the most pressure-packed situations is undoubtedly a skill. We have the "clutch" designation for a reason, and the difference between certain practice squad players vs. those on the starting roster may come down to that ability to handle pressure.
But many, many other factors also determine whether a player is NFL-quality or not, and the assumption that many of those players are perfectly fine not reaching the next level is borderline uncharitable from Brady. There may be examples where it's true, but assuming it's a shared trait of practice squad players is a logically dubious extrapolation.
