New Vikings Rumors on Kyler Murray Acting Like 'Alpha QB' amid J.J. McCarthy Competition
Kyler Murray has reportedly "handled himself like an alpha quarterback" in the QB1 competition with J.J. McCarthy thus far during the Minnesota Vikings' offseason. However, McCarthy has also impressed Vikings coaches with his improvements.
ESPN's Jeremy Fowler provided the latest during a quick rundown of QB battles around the league (1:02 mark) during Friday's edition of NFL Live.

Ranking Top 2026 NFL Comeback Candidates
"I talked to sources in the building who said Kyler Murray has handled himself like an alpha quarterback. He's walked in with the experience and the swagger you would expect from a guy who's been to Pro Bowls and had success. He's also taken the offense very quickly, he's absorbed it in a hurry, so the expectation leaguewide is that he will have the leg up.
"However, J.J. McCarthy, I'm told that he's made improvements that the Vikings coaches have noted and have told him so, things like layering the ball a little better, using all the clubs in your bag, not throwing a fastball all the time. He's shown some things this spring that have been impressive so far."
It makes sense that Murray would have the edge in the competition, even if it's very early in the offseason (voluntary offseason team activities).
Murray has seven seasons of NFL experience with two Pro Bowl appearances.
Although he has some struggles with the Arizona Cardinals before the player and team parted ways, Murray was still productive, completing 67.1 percent of his passes for 121 touchdowns (60 interceptions) and 20,460 yards (7.0 yards per attempt) in 87 starts.
He also has found success on the ground with 3,193 rushing yards and 32 touchdowns.
McCarthy struggled in his first season on the field with the Vikings after missing all of 2024 with a torn meniscus. He connected on 57.6 percent of passes for 11 touchdowns (12 interceptions) and 1,632 yards (6.7 YPA). The former Michigan star (and No. 10 overall pick in the 2024 NFL draft) added 181 rushing yards and four scores.
Injuries (high ankle sprain, concussion, a small hairline fracture in his hand) certainly hindered his progress, to the point where he missed seven games.
Ultimately, the Vikings still finished 9-8, but it appears Minnesota wanted to add to the QB room and take advantage of a talented roster capable of making the playoffs. Enter Murray, who signed a one-year deal with Minnesota. He may have the leg up right now, but the offseason still looms as the competition continues.
