Nick Bosa Gives Injury Update, Return Timeline Amid Torn ACL Rehab Ahead of 49ers' 2026 Season

Paul KasabianMay 28, 2026

San Francisco 49ers edge-rusher Nick Bosa, who suffered a torn ACL in his right knee on Sept. 21 against the Arizona Cardinals, told reporters Thursday he plans on "being ready" around training camp in late July (h/t Kirsten Moran-Keller of FOX 40).

"I'm pretty far along," Bosa said, per ESPN's Nick Wagoner. "[I'm] out on the field doing a lot of stuff, trying to just take it slow because I tend to push things quicker. I got injured pretty early last year, so there's plenty of time for me to really kind of lay the groundwork to be ready for a long season. It's going really well and I plan on being ready."

Per Wagoner, the 49ers have "always eyed a late July or early August return" for Bosa since he suffered the ACL tear early in the season and thankfully didn't have damage to any other ligament or his meniscus. Head coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters the tear was "as clean as it gets."

This marks Bosa's third ACL tear. He suffered a partially torn right ACL during his senior year of high school (2015) and a torn left ACL in the second week of the 2020 season.

Neither has stopped Bosa from enjoying an excellent career, of course.

Bosa has been one of the best pass-rushers in football when healthy, making five Pro Bowlers and racking up 64.5 sacks and 168 quarterback hits in 85 career games.

In the present day, the 28-year-old is at voluntary offseason team activities and doing work on the side. That's a great sign for a 49ers team which amassed a league-low 20 sacks last year.

Despite the pass-rush woes, the 49ers went 12-5 and defeated the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFC Wild Card round. Enjoying a season of better health, including having Bosa back, should go a long way toward even greater success in 2026.
