No. 1 Jannik Sinner Loses to Cerundolo, Updated French Open Men's Bracket, Roland-Garros Results

The No. 1 seed in the 2026 men's singles draw of the Roland-Garros tournament did not make it to the third round.

Juan Manuel Cerundolo stunned the tennis world with a 3-6, 2-6, 7-5, 6-1, 6-1 five-set victory over top-seeded Jannik Sinner in Thursday's second-round matchup. It seemed like Sinner was going to cruise to victory when he won the first two sets with ease, but he appeared to struggle with the heat and cramping as the match continued.

He even exited the court with apparent cramps during the third set.

That means Cerundolo advanced to the third round of the men's singles bracket, which can be found in full on the Roland-Garros website, and will face either Martin Landaluce or Vit Kopriva.

As for Sinner, he saw his 30-match winning streak that dated back to February come to an end.

According to the Associated Press, the temperature at the start of the match was 84 degrees fahrenheit with the expectation it would rise to 91 degrees. The TNT broadcast said the heat was "unprecedented" for the players in this tournament.

Sinner was serving for the match in the third set but bent over during that game and needed to leave the court. He returned with an ice pack around his neck and ended up losing the set.

It was clear Cerundolo was going to win as the match continued after the break.

The unranked challenger lost a total of two games in the final two sets as Sinner continued to struggle under the conditions. The crowd did its best to help the top seed with cheers of support, but the ending of the match felt like nothing more than a formality.

Still, this is a shocking result.

With his last loss coming back in February and that 30-match winning streak entering Thursday's second round, a straightforward Sinner victory was the expected result. What's more, anything less than a title with Carlos Alcaraz not competing at Roland-Garros because of injury figured to be surprising.

In reality, he never came close to challenging for the title and is still missing Roland-Garros for a career Grand Slam.

Sinner is a four-time Grand Slam winner with two of the victories coming at the Australian Open to go with his 2025 triumph at Wimbledon and 2024 win at the U.S. Open. This year seemed to be a golden opportunity to complete the career Grand Slam given the Alcaraz situation, but the heat proved to be too much.

He still has further opportunity to add Grand Slam titles to his resume this year with Wimbledon and the U.S. Open yet to come, but he will have to wait until at least 2027 to challenge for the career Grand Slam after the loss to Cerundolo.

Cerundolo notched 14 aces to Sinner's five and converted eight of the 14 break points he created.

While Sinner's struggles with the heat and eventual loss were the biggest storylines, it was still an impressive performance against the world's top-ranked player.
