Jets, Seahawks Reportedly Make Surprise Trade, Full Details Revealed in New NFL Rumors amid OTAs
The Seattle Seahawks reportedly acquired a wide receiver and special teamer in a trade with the New York Jets on Wednesday.
According to Zack Rosenblatt of The Athletic, the Seahawks agreed to send a conditional seventh-round draft pick to the Jets in exchange for Irvin Charles.
The 29-year-old Charles went undrafted in 2022 after playing collegiately at Penn State and Indiana University of Pennsylvania. He signed with the Jets as an undrafted free agent and was part of the organization for the past four seasons.
After spending 2022 on the Jets' practice squad, Charles saw game action during both the 2023 and 2024 seasons.
In 2023, Charles recorded seven special teams tackles in 12 games, and in 2024 he had seven special teams tackles and a blocked punt before tearing his ACL in Week 14.
The 6'4", 219-pound Charles did not catch a pass over the course of those two seasons, and he played a total of just 53 offensive snaps. However, he was a big-time contributor in special teams, as he played 450 special teams snaps.
As he recovered from a torn ACL, Charles did not see any game action with the Jets last season, but now he will have an opportunity to establish himself as an important part of the special teams unit in Seattle.
Charles is going from a Jets team that tied for the worst record in the NFL last season at 3-14 to a Seahawks team that won the Super Bowl.
Seattle is already stacked at wideout when it comes to players who are going to contribute offensively with Jaxon Smith-Njigba, Cooper Kupp, Rashid Shaheed and Tory Horton.
Because of that, Charles doesn't figure to see much action on offense unless it's because of injuries or during garbage time.
Even so, Charles could play a meaningful role for a team with a legitimate chance to vie for back-to-back championships.
