New NFL Rumors on Kayvon Thibodeaux Asking Price in Giants Trade Talks, Relationship With Coaches
The New York Giants are not in a rush to trade Kayvon Thibodeaux despite the team's abundance of edge rushers, ESPN's Jordan Raanan reported Wednesday.
According to Raanan, the Giants could have landed a second-round pick had they decided to trade Thibodeaux earlier this offseason.
"A source said Thibodeaux has impressed the new staff this offseason and is valued significantly higher than what the rest of the league offered," Raanan reported.
Raanan added: "'You can never have enough pass rushers' is something you've consistently heard from coach John Harbaugh and the Giants this offseason."
Thibodeaux is set to earn a $14.75 million base salary in 2026 after the Giants exercised the fifth-year team option on his rookie contract, per Spotrac.
He joins Brian Bruns, Abdul Carter and Arvell Reese as players with edge rushing experience on the current Giants roster.
Raanan added that Harbaugh "is not interested in a rebuild" in his first season with the Giants and the team's second with quarterback Jaxson Dart.
Because trading Thibodeaux would make the team worse in the short term, a trade "would have to be a deal that absolutely blows them away," Raanan reported.
Raanan noted that, should Thibodeaux play out the rest of his rookie deal in New York, the Giants could use a franchise tag on him for 2027 and consider a trade next season.
Questions about Thibodeaux's future with the team came up during the 2026 NFL draft after the Giants used the No. 5 pick to draft former Ohio State edge rusher Reese.
When asked after the first round if picking Reese gave the Giants the flexibility to move on from Thibodeaux, Harbaugh answered, "No. We keep all the good players as much as we can. We love Kayvon."
Harbaugh said later in the draft he planned to play Reese at inside linebacker while keeping Thibodeaux and Carter on the edge.
He added that those designations could change in a defense he described as "position-less."
Keeping Thibodeaux in New York would allow Harbaugh more flexibility to shift around his defense as he prepares to begin his first season with the Giants after 18 years leading the Baltimore Ravens.
Thibodeaux, who will turn 26 in December, recorded just 2.5 sacks in 10 games of the 2025 season.
Should he return to the level of performance that saw him rack up 11.5 sacks in 17 games of the 2023 campaign, he would increase the chance another team would be willing to give up a haul to acquire him at the deadline or that the Giants will franchise tag him next spring.
