Tuesday Highlights
Latvia def. Hungary, 8-1
Latvia clinched a quarterfinals berth with a blowout victory of Hungary.
Rudolfs Balcers opened scoring on a first-period power play with his seventh goal of the tournament, the most ever scored by a Latvian player at a single Worlds.
Latvia scored twice more on two more power plays. By the time Marton Nemes got Hungary on the board late in the second period, Latvia had already grabbed a five-goal lead.
Latvia finished out the game having outshot Hungary 26-15 as goaltender Kristers Gudlevskis made 14 saves.
Latvia, which won a bronze medal in 2023, will eliminate Germany while advancing again to the knockout round. Hungary will avoid relegation as it finishes seventh in Group A above Great Britain.
Norway def. Denmark, 4-3 (OT)
Michael Brandsegg-Nygard made history with his game-winning overtime goal for Norway.
Brandsegg-Nygard scored just 13 seconds into overtime against Denmark, tying the tournament record for fastest overtime goal held by Switzerland's Roman Wick and Canada's John Tavares.
Norway opened scoring in the first period before Denmark's Joachim Blichfeld after taking advantage of a failed penalty-kill clear in the second period.
Norway then regained the lead with two goals in a span of four minutes.
The Norwegians just two seconds away from a regulation win when Denmark's Patrick Russell tipped in his tying goal.
Denmark's hopes of completing the comeback didn't last for long before Brandsegg-Nygard's overtime winner.
Where Norway finishes in the group standings will depend on the results of Canada versus Czechia later on Tuesday.
United States def. Austria, 4-1
The United States rose to the occasion in a must-win game with one of the team's strongest showings of the tournament so far.
Team USA opened Tuesday's game against Austria with four straight goals to climb back into a knockout round slot in Group B.
Connor Clifton opened scoring before Ryan Ufko and Paul Cotter padded the lead.
Matthew Tkachuk stretched the advantage to four goals with a power-play strike midway through the second period.
Austria's Simeon Schwinger scored late in the second to spoil the shutout for Cooley.
As the lowest knockout seed in Group A, Team USA is now on track to take on Group B-leading Canada in the quarterfinals.
Sweden def. Slovakia, 4-2
Swedish goaltender Magnus Hellberg turned aside six shots from Slovakia in Tuesday's third period to backstop his team into the knockout round.
Sweden gained an early lead thanks in part to Ivar Stenberg, who put the his team up by two goals after beating Slovakia's defense midway through the second period.
Marek Hrivik scored on a power play to get Slovakia within one by the end of the frame, but Hellberg stayed perfect through the third to seal the win.
Sweden will now advance to the quarterfinals to play either Switzerland or Finland. Slovakia, having missed the knockout round by a single point, is eliminated from the tournament.
Canada fell into an early 2-0 deficit thanks to goals from Czechia's Marek Alscher and Dominik Kubalik.

Canada came back from a two-goal deficit to finish out the preliminary round with a 7-0 record.
Macklin Celebrini finished off a passing play from Dylan Cozens and Sidney Crosby to get Canada on the board late in the second period.
Celebrini scored again on another feed from Crosby to tie the game midway through the third period.
John Tavares gave Canada their first lead of the game with a diving effort in front of the net minutes later.
The Czechs successfully challenged an empty-netter by Canada but were unable to score a tying goal before the end of regulation.
Switzerland def. Finland, 4-2
Switzerland spoiled Aleksander Barkov's comeback attempt to close out the preliminary round with a win over Finland.
It took just 40 seconds for Switzerland to get on the board thanks to an opening goal from Attilio Biasca.
Ken Jager added to the lead just over three minutes later to put the Swiss up 2-0.
Barkov answered in the second period by tying the game with a pair of even-strength goals two and a half minutes apart.
Switzerland took advantage of a late Finland penalty when Jager scored the go-ahead goal with just over three minutes left in regulation. Nico Hischier then closed out the Swiss victory with an empty-netter.
