New Jets Rumors on Cade Klubnik's Spot in QB Depth Chart amid Russell Wilson Links
After being drafted by the New York Jets with a fourth-round pick, rookie quarterback Cade Klubnik reportedly will have the opportunity to compete for the backup job behind Geno Smith.
According to ESPN's Rich Cimini, the Jets haven't signed a veteran backup quarterback "because they want to see what Klubnik can do over the next month." Cimini noted that New York has "been in contact with a number of free agents, most notably Russell Wilson," and "can always acquire a veteran for training camp" if Klubnik doesn't prove himself.
Klubnik will be competing against second-year pro Brady Cook and journeyman Bailey Zappe when the Jets open voluntary OTAs on Wednesday. The team will have a mandatory minicamp on June 16-18 before starting training camp later this summer.

According to Cimini, Klubnik "looked good at the recent rookie camp," but he will face a different level of competition during OTAs. His performance "should give the coaches a better idea of his ability to absorb and execute the system."
Smith is the clear-cut starter, and the Jets could use a reliable signal-caller with experience behind him. However, it sounds like head coach Aaron Glenn is willing to give Klubnik the chance to prove himself as a rookie, and the backup job is up for grabs this offseason.
