John Carlson, Lightning Reportedly Agree to Contract in NHL Free Agency After Ducks Stint

Veteran defenseman John Carlson is on the move again after helping the Anaheim Ducks reach the 2026 Stanley Cup Playoffs.

Carlson and the Tampa Bay Lightning agreed to an two-year, $17 million contract, TSN's Pierre LeBrun reported Wednesday.

The Carolina Hurricanes previously acquired Carlson's rights as a pending unrestricted free agent by dealing a 2026 sixth-rounder and defensive prospect Kyle Masters to the Ducks.

That Hurricanes were ultimately unable to finalize an extension before Carlson hit unrestricted free agency Wednesday.

Carlson was initially traded to the Ducks at the March deadline in the final season of his previous eight-year, $8 million AAV deal with the Washington Capitals.

After 16 and a half seasons as an anchor of the Capitals' blue line, Carlson quickly became a key component of the Ducks' push for the playoffs.

He made his Ducks debut on March 15 and led his team in average ice time for the last 16 games of the season as Anaheim clinched the franchise's first postseason berth in eight years.

He also tied for the team lead in assists (10) and ranked second among all skaters with 14 points over that span.

Carlson, who spent most of the postseason playing alongside 22-year-old Pavel Mintyukov, averaged more than 24 minutes per game while helping the Ducks win their first series since 2017.

He recorded six assists in 12 playoff games before the Ducks' playoff run ended with a second-round loss to the Vegas Golden Knights.

The Lightning recently parted ways with Darren Raddysh after sending him to the Toronto Maple Leafs in a sign-and-trade.

Signing Carlson will allow the Lightning to fill in for that departure on shorter-term deal than the eight-year contract Raddysh signed in Toronto.

Carlson could potentially slot in on the right side of the Lightning's top defense pairing alongside former Norris Trophy winner Victor Hedman.

A healthier season from Hedman and another strong campaign from Carlson could help the Lightning ice a stronger first pairing next season.

Originally selected by Washington in the first round of the 2008 draft, Carlson helped the Capitals win the franchise's first Stanley Cup in 2018.

He is heading into the 2026-27 campaign ranked fifth among active NHL defensemen with 785 points in 1,159 career games.
