Roman Anthony Injury Update Provided by Red Sox President amid Rumors on Finger Issue
Amid a recent setback in Roman Anthony's recovery from a wrist injury, Boston Red Sox president Sam Kennedy has provided an update on the exact nature of the issue.
Appearing on WEEI's The Greg Hill Show on Friday, Kennedy explained that Anthony has a sprained ligament at the base of his ring finger and multiple images taken confirm there is no tear.

Anthony originally suffered the injury after fouling off a pitch during the Red Sox game against the Detroit Tigers on May 4. He was examined by the training staff on the field before being removed.
The Red Sox placed Anthony on the 10-day injured list three days later, though at the time it was expected to be a short absence. He also clarified at the time that the injury was to his finger when it was initially believed to be a wrist issue:
"There's so much that goes on in the hand, and I've never dealt with a hand issue before. So, I think just getting the news back, understanding that it's nothing very serious, is the best news we could have gotten. The treatment is pretty simple, trying to get a lot of blood flow circulating around the wrist and the arm. Nothing too crazy. Just a little sprain. The ligament near the ring finger. Nothing that will take too long. So, I think that's the best part."
Anthony was working out and taking swings before Monday's game against the Kansas City Royals when he experienced soreness in his right hand.
Red Sox interim manager Chad Tracy told reporters that Anthony was going to be shut down from swinging until his soreness went away.
Kennedy didn't provide any sort of timeline for Anthony to resume baseball activities. The 22-year-old was hitting .229/.354/.321 in 130 plate appearances this season prior to the injury.
Anthony finished third in AL Rookie of the Year voting in 2025 despite playing just 71 games. He hit .292/.396/.463 with eight homers and was expected to be a key player for Boston in 2026.
The Red Sox have started to play better since Tracy took over as interim manager following Alex Cora's firing on April 25. They are 12-10 under Tracy and have moved within two games of a wild card spot in the AL.
