Bill Belichick Talks Tom Brady Georgetown Speech Joke, Patriots Icon's Super Bowl Title With Bucs
Former New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick doesn't harbor any ill feelings toward his former quarterback, Tom Brady, even after his recent joke.
Belichick was asked about Brady recently calling him a "cranky old coach" during his commencement speech at Georgetown, and the 74-year-old laughed it off.
"It is funny," Belichick said during an appearance on Hang Out with Sean Hannity (28:25 mark). "We look back at those moments and laugh. But honestly, he was a great guy to coach, a great teammate. As I said, I learned so much from him."
Belichick and Brady won six Super Bowl titles together in New England, so it's no surprise that the current UNC football coach doesn't mind a playful barb from his former signal-caller. Brady drew a laugh when he alluded to Belichick in his speech to the Georgetown graduates.
"I want you to challenge yourself with ideas that are uncomfortable and people who push you to be your very best," Brady said. "Even if one of those people is a cranky old coach who cuts the sleeves off his sweatshirt and screams at you all day, 'Do your job.'"
Belichick was also asked about Brady's departure from the Patriots to join the Tampa Bay Buccaneers ahead of the 2020 season. He admitted that Brady leaving was "absolutely the right thing for him to do" because "we just didn't have a good football team."
Brady went on to win his seventh career Super Bowl title in his first season with the Bucs. Belichick added that he's happy that Brady ended his legendary career on a high note, because he knew that wouldn't have happened with the Patriots.
"Honestly, I'm just happy for him that things worked out well for him in Tampa," Belichick said. "It wouldn't have gone well in 2020 in New England, I can guarantee that."
