Bill Belichick Reacts to Pro Football Hall of Fame Snub in New Video After 6 Super Bowl Titles as HC

Julia StumbaughMay 19, 2026

Former New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick says he was "absolutely" happy to hear supporters including Tom Brady express frustration with his snub as a first-ballot Pro Football Hall of Famer.

"It was great to hear that support from so many people, and from so many different fields, not just football," Belichick said around the 4:45 mark of a Tuesday appearance on Hang Out with Sean Hannity.

When asked further about the snub, Belichick answered, "You'd have to ask the voters. I didn't have to say in it."

Belichick was not named to the Hall of Fame's Class of 2026 in his first year of eligibility despite winning six Super Bowls as head coach of the Patriots and two as defensive coordinator for the New York Giants.

He is currently heading into his second season as head coach at North Carolina after leading the Tar Heels to a 4-8 record in 2025.

When first asked about the HOF snub, Belichick answered: "Out of my control, and honestly, I'm very focused on my job at the University of North Carolina... whatever happens, happens.

"I'm proud of what we accomplished as teams in New England, and certainly with the Giants, and proud of those relationships. So, that's what matters most."

Some of the Patriots players who won titles with Belichick had a less measured response to initially learning about their former coach not making it to Canton in 2026.

Brady said in January that if Belichick wasn't a first-ballot Hall of Famer, no other coaches should be either.

Matt Cassel described the decision as "insane and absolutely ridiculous," while Damien Woody called for transparency regarding "madness" from the voters.

Other figures around the sports world, including LeBron James, Patrick Mahomes, Deion Sanders and Jimmy Johnson, also publicly derided the decision.

The pushback reached the point that the Hall of Fame released a statement saying that the selection process and voting committee were reviewed annually, and that voters who violated bylaws could be removed going forward.

Belichick needed 40 votes from the 50-person committee to make it into the 2026 class, but reportedly fell short despite ranking second only to Don Shula for the most career wins as an NFL head coach.

NFL Network's Judy Battista reported in February Hall of Fame is considering changes to its voting procedure, including publicizing the votes and including more non-media members in the committee, before selecting the 2027 class.
