Colt Emerson Reportedly Called Up By Mariners, What to Know About MLB's No. 6 Prospect

Timothy RappMay 17, 2026

Another top prospect is heading to the big leagues.

Seattle Mariners' shortstop prospect Colt Emerson has reportedly been called up to the Major Leagues, according to Ryan Divish of the Seattle Times. Emerson is MLB.com's No. 6 overall prospect.

Per MLB.com's scouting report, "Considered one of the best pure hitters in the Minors, Emerson combines a smooth left-handed swing and an advanced approach to be a very dangerous hitter. He finds the barrel consistently and can hit the ball hard with extra-base authority to all fields. He started tapping into his raw power more in 2025, with most of his over-the-fence thump coming to his pull side. He draws tons of walks and doesn't hurt himself by chasing or swinging and missing much. He'll always be a hit-over-power guy, but there's more than enough bat speed and improving strength to believe he could get to at least 20 homers annually."

There were previously some questions regarding whether he could stick at shortstop or would need to be moved to third base, though a strong 2025 season defensively largely quelled that talk. But he's also worked at the hot corner, giving the Mariners some optionality.

The 20-year-old is having a strong season in Triple-A, hitting .255 with seven homers, 26 RBI, 26 runs, 10 stolen bases and a .816 OPS across 55 games. He appears to be more than ready for The Show.

The Mariners clearly believe in Emerson, signing him to an eight-year, $95 million contract in April.

"We were willing to pay what you'd have to call a premium," Seattle's president of baseball operations, Jerry Dipoto, told Daniel Kramer of MLB.com at the time regarding the Emerson contract. "And the way we distributed the salaries through the course of the contract [$20 million through the first three years, $75 million through the final five and a $25 million team option in 2034] allows us to continue to do things like this in the years to come. Because we're not going to be about three or four guys who are here for a period of time. We want this to be a continuous part of what we do."

If Emerson struggles to reach his potential, that contract will age poorly. But if he reaches his ceiling and becomes a superstar, he'll end up being quite the bargain on the back end of the deal. That journey begins shortly.
