Max Fried Injury Update, Latest News on Yankees Star's Status, Return Timeline

Paul KasabianMay 15, 2026

The New York Yankees announced that left-handed starting pitcher Max Fried will go on the 15-day injured list with a left elbow bone bruise. Jon Heyman of the New York Post relayed the news and provided more information.

Fried has gone 4-3 with a 3.21 ERA, 1.01 WHIP and 50 strikeouts in 10 starts (61.2 innings) this year. He exited his team's 7-0 road loss to the Baltimore Orioles on Wednesday after three innings due to left elbow posterior soreness.

Fried joined the Yankees last year on an eight-year, $218 million contract after playing eight seasons with the Atlanta Braves. He led the major leagues with 19 wins (just five losses) while posting a 2.86 ERA and 189 strikeouts in 195.1 innings (32 starts). Fried earned All-Star honors while finishing fourth in the Cy Young race and winning a Gold Glove.

This year hasn't been as good, but it's clear something was bothering Fried, who spoke a bit about the ailment after the Orioles game.

"It's just a little uncomfortable and tight, especially between innings," Fried said, per Bryan Hoch of MLB.com. "It's hard for me to loosen up. I just wasn't sharp, and it was just hard to keep bouncing back. I definitely wasn't helping the team. I could've kept pitching, but at that point, it was like, 'Hey, let's make sure we can calm this thing down.'"

Fried allowed five hits and three earned runs in three innings against the O's, one start after he gave up five earned runs, six hits and three walks at the Milwaukee Brewers. He has allowed at least three earned runs in six of his 10 starts.

Per Hoch, Fried said the elbow didn't bother him vs. Milwaukee, but it has in "numerous starts this year."

"Normally, it goes away," Fried said. "This one, I think it's probably just one too many times. It's a little irritated."

Hopefully Fried is able to come back sooner rather than later. The good news is that this scare didn't result in Fried needing Tommy John surgery. But now the watch is on for Fried's return as the 27-17 Yankees look to rebound after a 1-5 stretch this weekend against the New York Mets.
