Yankees Recall Anthony Volpe, Latest Roster News Amid Jose Caballero Finger Injury
Shortstop Anthony Volpe is on his way back to the Bronx Bombers.
The New York Yankees confirmed they called up Volpe from the Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders. The roster move comes after José Caballero suffered a finger injury in New York's 4-3 defeat to the Milwaukee Brewers on Sunday. Caballero was moved to the 10-day injured list.
Volpe opened the season in the minors as he completed his rehab from shoulder surgery. Rather than calling him up to the bigs when his rehab assignment ended, the Yankees optioned him to Triple-A.
Manager Aaron Boone cited Caballero's performance as one reason behind the decision, but it was hard not to see the choice as an indictment on Volpe's development.
As much value as he has provided on defense, the 25-year-old has slugged just .379 with a .288 wOBA and 85 wRC+ through his first three seasons in pinstripes, per FanGraphs.
If Volpe found something that clicked at the plate during his stay in the minors, it didn't show up in his production. In 18 games, he had a .221/.276/.294 slash line along with one homer.
Caballero's injury presents Volpe with an opportunity to become an MLB regular again, and he may need to make the most of it.
