Mets Reportedly Call Up Top Position Prospect with Team Last in MLB Standings

Scott PolacekMay 11, 2026

The New York Mets could use a boost following a 15-25 start to the season, and they are reportedly turning to their list of prospects for just that.

Will Sammon of The Athletic reported Monday the last place team in the National League East is calling up outfielder A.J. Ewing. According to MLB.com's prospect rankings, Ewing is the top position player and the No. 2 overall player in the Mets' farm system behind only pitcher Jonah Tong.

Sammon speculated the Mets could start Ewing in center field and Carson Benge in right field while Juan Soto plays either designated hitter or left field.

Ewing could cover center field with the "big-time speed" that Jon Heyman of the New York Post highlighted while evaluating Monday's move. The Mets are 23rd in the league in stolen bases this season, so they could also use his speed on the basepaths.

The 21-year-old's bat also stands out.

In 30 games spread across Double-A Binghamton and Triple-A Syracuse this season, he is slashing .339/.447/.514 with two home runs, 11 RBI and 17 stolen bases. He also has nine doubles and two triples, as his speed helps him pick up extra bases to make up for a lack of game-changing power.

He also stole 70 bases last season across three different minor-league teams.

The Mets had high expectations entering the season but lost 12 straight games following a 7-4 start. They have not been able to bounce back with any level of consistency since and have lost three out of four heading into Tuesday's series-opener against the Detroit Tigers.

There is still plenty of time remaining this season for New York to turn things around, and perhaps Ewing can help it do just that. It is 12.5 games behind the first-place Atlanta Braves in the division and eight games behind the St. Louis Cardinals for the final wild-card spot.

If Ewing lives up to expectations, perhaps the team can start chipping away at the deficits.
