Craig Morton Dies at 83, Former QB Spent 18 Years in NFL with Cowboys, Broncos, Giants

Former Dallas Cowboys, New York Giants and Denver Broncos quarterback Craig Morton died on Saturday at the age of 83, the Broncos announced Monday.

He spent parts of 10 seasons with the Cowboys (1965-74), throwing for 10,279 yards, 80 touchdowns and 73 interceptions before. He was replaced by eventual Hall of Famer Roger Staubach as the starter in 1973 and traded to the Giants in 1974.

Morton reached two Super Bowls with Dallas, losing Super Bowl V as the starter but winning a ring in Super Bowl VI as Staubach's backup.

He was with the Giants until 1976, throwing for 5,734 yards, 29 touchdowns and 49 interceptions in 34 games.

But Morton's time with the Broncos was the pinnacle of his career. In 72 games he threw for 5,734 yards, 74 touchdowns and 65 interceptions, going 41-23 as the starter while leading the team to the playoffs three times, including its first playoff appearance and Super Bowl berth in the 1977 season.

He was the AFC's Offensive Player of the Year in 1977 and was enshrined in Denver's Ring of Fame.

He finished his career with a 81-62-1 record during the regular season and a 5-5 mark in the postseason.
