New NFL Rumors on 'Alpha' Kyler Murray vs. J.J. McCarthy QB1 Battle as Vikings See 'a Real Steal'

Joseph ZuckerMay 10, 2026

The Minnesota Vikings are encouraged by what they've seen so far from quarterback Kyler Murray, according to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler.

Fowler reported Sunday on SportsCenter that "two things have stood out" since Murray started showing up at the team facility:

"He carries himself as an alpha; not in a cocky way, just he's got the experience he believes he can win that job over J.J. McCarthy, be the guy. Also, offensive coaches have been thrilled with how he's attacked things, how he's been in meetings. So, they believe they've got a real steal here. There's a blueprint for Kyler Murray, based on what Daniel Jones did a year ago, go play somewhere new, get a one-year deal, knock it out the park and get the big money as an established starter after that."

It's easy to see the upside with Murray.

The 29-year-old never really hit rock bottom with the Arizona Cardinals. In 2024, his last full season as a starter, he threw for 3,851 yards, 21 touchdowns and 11 interceptions, adding 572 yards and five scores on the ground.

When Jones, Baker Mayfield and Sam Darnold all had mid-career renaissances, there's no reason why it can't happen with Murray. And when he's only making $1.3 million, Minnesota isn't out a lot of cash if this partnership flops.

Injuries have been a consistent problem for the 5'10" signal-caller, though. The Athletic's Jeff Howe also reported in March, before his release from Arizona, that "multiple league sources relayed concerns about his leadership skills."

To some degree, Murray's reputation never recovered from the moment when the Cardinals included — and hastily removed — the "independent study" clause in his $230.5 million extension.

Retired offensive lineman Andrew Whitworth had a pointed assessment of Murray in 2025, telling Fitz & Whit co-host Ryan Fitzpatrick the two-time Pro Bowler "doesn't bring it" as a locker room leader or tone-setter.

Given what's at stake for him, the Vikings should get the best version of Murray. He knows the upcoming season is pivotal for him to remind everyone why he's worthy of being a starter. Should he do that, a massive contract could be waiting on him next spring.

Figuring out Murray's long-term value could be a tricky challenge for Minnesota, but the team can cross that bridge when it comes. There's also the McCarthy component to consider down the road.

In the here and now, the franchise might've caught lightning in a bottle like it did with Darnold in 2024.
