Pete Alonso's Harsh Message for David Stearns During Mets Contract Talks Reportedly Revealed
Prior to re-signing with the New York Mets ahead of the 2025 MLB season, first baseman Pete Alonso reportedly took a shot at general manager David Stearns during negotiations.
According to Jon Heyman of the New York Post, Alonso told Stearns, "When my career is being evaluated for the Hall of Fame years from now, you'll still be fiddling with your f--king formulas."
Despite the dig at Stearns' affinity for analytics, Alonso ended up signing a two-year, $54 million contract with a player option for 2026.

When Alonso signed that deal, he was coming off a down year by his standards, as he slashed .240/.329/.459 with 34 home runs and 88 RBI in 2024. The homer and RBI totals were the lowest of his career aside from the COVID-shortened 2020 campaign.
While Alonso used Stearns' analytics obsession as a slight, Heyman noted that Alonso also told Stearns he planned on "using analytics and biomechanics to be back to his best soon."
Whatever Alonso did ended up working, as he rebounded in a big way in 2025, slashing .272/.347/.524 with 38 home runs and 126 RBI.
Even so, the Mets were among the biggest disappointments in Major League Baseball, finishing 83-79 and missing the playoffs.
Despite Alonso being one of the team's few bright spots, he was not retained after declining his player option for 2026, as he instead signed a five-year, $155 million contract with the Baltimore Orioles in free agency.
The 31-year-old veteran is off to a slow start, slashing .225/.329/.444 with seven homers and 21 RBI, plus the Orioles have struggled as a whole to the tune of a 17-21 record.
The Mets are scuffling to an even greater degree, though, as their 14-23 mark is tied for the worst record in the majors.
With the Mets missing the playoffs last year, it is fair to wonder if Stearns may be on the hot seat should they fail to reach the postseason once again.
