New Aaron Rodgers Rumors on Potential 'Secret Understanding' with Steelers amid Contract Talks

Adam WellsMay 8, 2026

With a potential resolution to the Aaron Rodgers-Pittsburgh Steelers saga coming soon, it's not believed the two sides have had any sort of under-the-table deal this entire time.

Appearing on Friday's episode of Good Morning Football, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport explained there is no indication of any sort of "secret understanding" between Rodgers and the Steelers that he is definitely returning in 2026.

The topic came up amid reports that Rodgers will be in Pittsburgh this weekend and could sign a deal to return to the Steelers. No deal is currently in place.

Since the Steelers' 2025 season ended with a playoff loss to the Houston Texans, Rodgers' status has been a key focus. Head coach Mike McCarthy told reporters during his introductory press conference on Jan. 27 that the team was "definitely" interested in bringing the four-time NFL MVP back.

Steelers owner Art Rooney II told Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette in March that they were expecting a decision from Rodgers before the draft.

After the draft passed with no word from Rodgers, the Steelers used the unrestricted free-agent tender that gives them the ability to match any potential offer sheet he might receive. He also has the option to accept a deal that would come with a 10 percent raise from his 2025 salary.

Rooney said the move was just protection for them in the event it was needed, and they have maintained regular contact with Rodgers.

The Steelers did add to their quarterback room in the draft by selecting Drew Allar in the third round. They also have Mason Rudolph and Will Howard under contract.

If Rodgers does sign with the Steelers within the next week, he won't have missed any significant part of their offseason program. They held a three-day voluntary minicamp from April 20-22.

The next key date on the Steelers' schedule is May 18 when they reconvene for their first day of OTAs.

Rodgers went 10-6 in 16 starts with the Steelers last season. He threw for 3,322 yards, 24 touchdowns and completed 65.7 percent of his attempts.
