Russell Wilson Reveals Jets Contract Offer, Talks Possible TV Future Amid NFL Free Agency Rumors
Free-agent quarterback Russell Wilson confirmed he received a formal contract offer from the New York Jets but has yet to decide on his playing status in 2026.
"They offered me, and I'm trying to figure out what the next best thing is for me to do," he told the New York Post's Ryan Dunleavy (via Josh Alper of Pro Football Talk). "I still know I can play ball at a high level, but also I have an opportunity to do TV, so we'll see what happens."
Wilson added he had a "great" visit with the Jets last month.
New York already has a starting QB in Geno Smith. The two-time Pro Bowler isn't a long-term solution at the position but can hold down the fort until the franchise reassesses everything next spring.
ESPN's Rich Cimini reported that "Smith advocated for Wilson when team officials solicited his input on potential backups."
It's quite the role reversal as Smith was Wilson's backup for three seasons with the Seattle Seahawks.
The door isn't closed on Wilson becoming a starting quarterback in the NFL again. However, the market is speaking for itself from the standpoint that he's no longer considered a good first option from the jump.
The 10-time Pro Bowler has earned more than $315 million, so he has enough money to be comfortable for generations over. In addition, the last few seasons have done him no favors in terms of his future case for Hall of Fame consideration.
It's little surprise that Wilson is still waffling on whether to retire or keep playing, and the media industry is another component in this.
The Athletic's Andrew Marchand reported last week that Wilson "is in deep discussions to go into television." He can seamlessly pivot into a new career should he hang up his cleats.
If the choices are playing for the Jets or making a lot of money while not playing for the Jets, one of the two certainly stands out.
