Sunday Highlights

Canadiens 2, Lightning 1

Montreal is moving on to the second round for the first time in five years after winning a historic series against the Lightning.

After Sunday's Game 7 ended as a one-goal game, the two teams completed the third series in Stanley Cup history in which all seven games were decided by just one goal.

It wasn't the best offensive performance from Montreal, as it finished with just nine shots, but it was enough to get the job done thanks to a tremendous performance from Jakub Dobes in goal.

The Canadiens scored in the first period thanks to a shot by Nick Suzukiย that was assisted by Kaiden Guhle and Josh Anderson, but Dominic James responded in the second to tie things up.

After Montreal went without a single shot in the second period, it finally got the go-ahead goal in the third, courtesy of Alex Newhook.

The goal from Newhook proved to be the decider as Tampa Bay couldn't answer, and the Habs will now get a second-round matchup against the Buffalo Sabres.

Avalanche 9, Wild 6

The second game of the night made up for the lack of offense in the first contest.

There were a combined 78 shots between Colorado and Minnesota as the Avalanche took the first game of the series. The 15 goals scored are tied for the fifth-most in NHL playoff history.

Sam Malinski got scoring started for the Avalanche before Jack Drury and Artturi Lehkonenย tacked on two more to make it a quick 3-0 lead for Colorado in the first period.

But Minnesota came storming back, as Marcus Johansson and Ryan Hartmanย each scored in the span of a minute to cut the lead to one goal.

But the Avs' offense stayed hot in the second period, as Nick Blankenburg found the back of the net to make it 4-2. Vladimir Tarasenko answered for the Wild a few minutes later.

Later in the second, Quinn Hughes tied things up before Marcus Folignoย gave the Wild the lead.

Things were all tied up heading into the third period after Devon Toews scored late in the second.

In the third period, Cale Makar gave the Avalanche the lead, and Nazem Kadri later gave them some insurance.

Both offenses went stagnant for a bit before Minnesota cut the lead to one on a goal from Mats Zuccarello, but another goal from Makar followed by an open-net goal from Nathan MacKinnon, sealed the win for Colorado.

It's safe to say the series got off to an interesting start, and it will be hard for Game 2 to match the offense that was on display on Sunday.
