New Cowboys Rumors on George Pickens Trade, Contract Negotiations and Fantasy Expectations for 2026

Joseph ZuckerMay 3, 2026

Veteran wide receiver George Pickens signed his one-year franchise tender with the Dallas Cowboys after taking a brief survey of the trade market, according to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler.

Fowler reported Sunday on SportsCenter that Dallas "didn't want to negotiate" a long-term deal after applying the franchise tag. As a result, the stage is set for the Cowboys and Pickens to do this all over again next spring:

"Well, my understanding is Pickens at least looked around, gauged his market what a potential trade could look like if he could come to one with compensation and a new deal. He wants a long-term contract, so this isn't an ideal situation for him. But he signed the tag because it locked him into $27 million guaranteed. I'm told he really does like Dallas. He's been working with Dak Prescott this offseason; he's expecting to have another big year. But it sounds like he's going to have to do one more year to get that big payday down the road. So, now that he signed the tender, he's good with the Cowboys. They should move forward; I'm not expecting a trade or new deal at this point, but it was sticky there for a couple of weeks where he was trying to figure out what his market could look like because they wouldn't negotiate."

Team COO Stephen Jones made it clear last month the front office had no plans to tie Pickens down beyond 2026. It doesn't sound like a trade was a serious consideration, either.

That left Pickens with little recourse. He had limited leverage once the franchise tag was applied, and a protracted holdout — one potentially dragging into the regular season — risked jeopardizing his earning power when he's back on the market.

The 25-year-old has a clear incentive to deliver when he's only under contract for one season. The Cowboys, for all of their hesitation on a more expensive deal, have also done nothing to diminish his role in the passing game. Marquez Valdes-Scantling is the most notable addition to the receiving corps.

Pickens needs to look no further than Prescott to see how this situation can benefit him in the long run.

Prescott played out the 2020 season on the franchise tag after he and the Cowboys couldn't hammer out an agreement before the July deadline. He wound up re-signing for four years and $160 million the following spring.

Micah Parsons' standoff resulted in a trade to the Green Bay Packers, but he still got the extension he wanted in the end.

If Pickens has another 1,000-yard campaign while sharing an offense with CeeDee Lamb, then he shouldn't have to settle for the franchise tag this time next year.
