"Randy, on behalf of the Seattle Mariners organization, your teammates, and generations of fans—thank you for your talent, your passion, your competitiveness, and your unforgettable impact on this franchise," Stanton said at the ceremony, via MLB.com. "Your legacy will forever tower over this ballpark. In your honor, in 2027 the Mariners will erect a statue honoring your history with the team."
Johnson suited up for Seattle from 1989 until 1998.
He's the fourth player to have his number retired by the club and will join fellow Hall of Famers Ken Griffey Jr., Edgar Martinez and Ichiro Suzuki.
Johnson initially arrived in Seattle following a trade with the Montreal Expos and immediately thrived, securing his first career All-Star nod in 1990.
He finished his Mariners tenure with five All-Star selections and earned American League Cy Young Award recognition for his 1995 campaign. That same year, Johnson helped Seattle make an ALCS appearance.
In 130 total games with the Mariners, he compiled a 3.42 ERA while racking up 2,162 strikeouts compared to 884 walks in 1,838.1 innings of work.
Johnson sits at No. 2 on Seattle's all-time strikeouts leaderboard. He also occupies the No. 2 spot on the Mariners' all-time complete games list as well as the No. 3 spot on their all-time innings pitched leaderboard.
Johnson was inducted into the team's Hall of Fame in 2012 and the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 2015.
Now, his No. 51 is immortalized in T-Mobile Park.
