Fantasy Football 2015: Rookie Rankings and Top Team Names for Young Stars

Rob GoldbergAug 8, 2015

With a new fantasy football season comes a new class of players ready to make an immediate impact in the NFL. The 2015 class also provides some new opportunities for clever and unique names for your teams.

Between Jeremy Hill, Odell Beckham Jr., Mike Evans and others, last season showed us rookies can be extremely valuable on a fantasy football team. The question is which players can make a similar impact this time around.

Here is a look at the top players worth drafting at each position.

Quarterbacks

1. Jameis Winston, Tampa Bay Buccaneers

You could have a long debate as to which of Jameis Winston and Marcus Mariota will have a better career, but Winston should be the easy bet for the better rookie season. The quarterback summed up the reasoning on ESPN:

The receiving duo of Mike Evans and Vincent Jackson is a best-case scenario for a young quarterback, as the two 6'5" leapers always seem to come down with the ball. Winston will get plenty of opportunities to be successful and should end up with a lot of touchdowns in his first season.

2. Marcus Mariota, Tennessee Titans

The early reports surrounding Mariota say he is set to be the full-time starting quarterback in Tennessee. Adding this to his ability to rack up rushing yards and the former Heisman Trophy winner could be set for a big year.

Still, there are plenty of question marks about the team around him as well as his ability to adjust to a pro-style offense. He might be worth a late-round flyer, but Winston is the safer pick this season.

Relevant Team Name: Super Mariota

Running Backs

He was the best running back in college football a year ago, and now he will have a chance to be the best rookie in the NFL this year. He has all the tools to succeed with speed, power and agility, but most importantly, he enters a good situation with the San Diego Chargers.

Even with more established options in the backfield, Gordon should be able to shoulder the load and put up big numbers right from the start.

Relevant Team Name: Commissioner Gordon

2. T.J. Yeldon, Jacksonville Jaguars

T.J. Yeldon was drafted to make an early impact in Jacksonville, and he seems to have already impressed the coaching staff. According to Ryan O'Halloran of the Florida Times-Union, "it will be surprising if Yeldon isn’t the tailback for Play 1 in Week 1."

Although the Jaguars haven't always created great situations for fantasy running backs, Yeldon is a safe option to be at least somewhat productive next season.

Relevant Team Name: Rebel Yeldon

3. Todd Gurley, St. Louis Rams

Many will be scared of picking a player coming off an ACL injury, especially with him unlikely to participate in preseason games, according to Kevin Patra of NFL.com. However, Andrew Siciliano of NFL.com already has seen positive progress:

Todd Gurley has tons of talent and will get to show it off sooner or later. As long as you are patient, it could lead to a great payoff.

Relevant Team Name: Gurley Man

4. Tevin Coleman, Atlanta Falcons

This is a depth-chart battle to watch, with Tevin Coleman and Devonta Freeman both having a case to be the starting running back in Atlanta. The good news is Coleman has the big-play ability to merit fantasy consideration even if he doesn't get the majority of carries.

Relevant Team Name: I'm a Cole Man

5. Ameer Abdullah, Detroit Lions

Joique Bell will be the go-to option on the ground for the Detroit Lions and should get most of the goal-line opportunities. Still, we have seen in recent years with Reggie Bush that a secondary running back can earn plenty of fantasy points from both rushing and receiving yards.

Of course, Ameer Abdullah will have to beat out Theo Riddick for the second spot.

Relevant Team Name: Ob-la-di Abdullah

Wide Receivers

1. Amari Cooper, Oakland Raiders

It often takes rookie receivers some time to get acclimated to the NFL, but Amari Cooper is as polished as they come. Jason McIntyre of Yahoo Sports provided a look at the receiver's excellent route running:

Quarterback Derek Carr should be able to find Cooper often throughout the year and help him become a top contender for the Rookie of the Year award.

Relevant Team Name: A-Mini Cooper

2. Kevin White, Chicago Bears

Although replacing Brandon Marshall won't be an easy task, the Chicago Bears have excelled in their passing attack the past few years thanks to the ability to throw the ball up to two big-time receivers. Alshon Jeffery will still be there to make plays, but this time Kevin White will be on the opposite side.

He isn't quite as ready to star as Cooper, but the talent is there for White to have a lot of good games this year.

Relevant Team Name: White House Down

3. Nelson Agholor, Philadelphia Eagles

Most fantasy success is situational. Putting Nelson Agholor's speed and quickness into an offense like the Philadelphia Eagles' could lead to some huge numbers right out of the gate.

Considering he is already working with the first team and the squad must replace Jeremy Maclin's production, you don't want to overlook this rookie.

Relevant Team Name: Agholor's Hammer

4. Breshad Perriman, Baltimore Ravens

Assuming the knee injury that has kept him out of practice doesn't end up being a larger problem, Breshad Perriman could have an important role with the Ravens this season. The speedster is raw as a receiver, but he will be a much-needed deep threat to spread the field offensively, especially with Torrey Smith now gone.

Don't be surprised to see more than a few 40-yard touchdowns during Perriman's first season.

Relevant Team Name: Breshad Heard 'Round the World

5. DeVante Parker, Miami Dolphins

Leading up to the NFL draft, DeVante Parker got a lot of buzz. However, a foot injury keeps him a question mark leading into the year. Still, the biggest issue is his competition at receiver, with Greg Jennings, Jarvis Landry, Kenny Stills and others taking away playing time.

Relevant Team Name: Parallel Parker
