Alex Cora Drops New Statement on Boston After Red Sox Firing 2 Days After 'Happy!' Post

Adam WellsApr 28, 2026

After some cryptic social media posting in the immediate aftermath of being fired by the Boston Red Sox, Alex Cora has put out a new statement thanking fans for their support during his tenure as manager.

In a post on X, Cora thanked Red Sox Nation for "making us part of you" and called them the heart of the team.

Red Sox management fired Cora, along with five coaches on his staff, on Saturday after a 17-1 win over the Baltimore Orioles. The next day he posted the word "happy" with a smiling emoji, as well as a video that was critical of the 2020 trade sending Mookie Betts to the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The Cora firing came as a surprise for many reasons, not least of which because it's rare for a manager to be dismissed this early into a season.

Derek Shelton was fired by the Pittsburgh Pirates 38 games into the 2025 campaign but he also had five consecutive losing seasons and a 294-414 overall record from 2020 to '24.

Cora had been with the Red Sox since 2018, with the exception of 2020 when he parted ways with the organization for his involvement in the sign-stealing scandal during his tenure as a coach with the 2017 Houston Astros.

The Red Sox made the playoffs last season, though they were just 10-17 to start this year at the time Cora was fired.

Addressing the situation on Sunday, Red Sox president Sam Kennedy told reporters that chief baseball officer Craig Breslow made the call to dismiss Cora.

"Craig leads our baseball operation and he's made several bold decisions and recommendations, and this was one of them," Kennedy said "That's why we took the action we took yesterday."

The move did not seem to be popular among Red Sox players, with Trevor Story saying he felt like everyone who got fired "didn't get a fair shot."

Cora finished his tenure in Boston with a 620-541 record and three playoff appearances, including a World Series victory in 2018. He ranks third in franchise history in career wins and games managed.

Chad Tracy, who had been managing Boston's Triple-A team since 2022, is taking over for Cora on an interim basis.
