Carlos Mendoza Reacts to Mets Hot-Seat Rumors in New Video After Being Swept by Rockies
The hot-seat watch is on for Carlos Mendoza after a 9-19 start to the season for the New York Mets.
But Mendoza said after a 3-0 loss to the Colorado Rockies that he plans to focus on doing his job well rather than wondering if he's going to lose it.
"The only thing I'm worried about is getting the guys going," Mendoza said. "I get it, it sucks. And I know the questions will continue to come up, but my job is to find a way to get those guys out of a funk. That's the bottom line."
After the game, the Mets designated outfielder Tommy Pham—who went 0-for-13 with the team—for assignment. The team subsequently signed outfielder Austin Slater—who elected free agency after being designated for assignment by the Miami Marlins—to a deal, according to The Athletic's Will Sammon.
At the forefront of the Mets' struggles has been the offense. Mendoza said the problems at the plate are unexplainable.
"It's hard to explain when you have that many guys that are going through it at the same time," he said. "It's just not a good showing. Not good at-bats up and down. You get a guy here and there, but overall, it's not hitting the ball hard consistently. Like I said, it's hard to explain, cause you usually get three or four guys that go through it, and you have four or five guys that can carry. But right now it's hard to describe."
Star Juan Soto also had no answer for the offensive woes, but said it's a "matter of time" before they figure things out.
"We all know what kind of talent we have in that lineup and what kind of hitters we have and how much damage they can do," Soto said. "It's just a matter of time that they're going to wake up and bring the best out of themselves."
The Mets are tied for the fewest runs this year (91) and have the sixth-worst team batting average (.230). Their 19 home runs are tied for the third-fewest in the majors.
New York's offensive struggles were on full display as it lost its series to the Rockies in a sweep, scoring just four runs across three games. The Mets were shut out on Sunday, marking their fifth shutout this year.
