'It Sucks,' Phillies' Trea Turner, More Reflect on 8-Game MLB Losing Streak, 'Not Having Much Fun'

Doric SamApr 23, 2026

It's still early in the season, but the Philadelphia Phillies' frustrations are already starting to boil over.

After falling to 8-16 with a 7-2 loss to the Chicago Cubs on Wednesday night, the Phillies have now dropped eight consecutive games, their longest losing streak since a nine-game skid in 2018. They now own the longest losing streak in MLB after the New York Mets snapped their 12-game skid with a 3-2 win over the Minnesota Twins on Wednesday.

"Yeah, it sucks," Phillies shortstop Trea Turner said of the team's recent woes, per Jesse Rogers of ESPN. "Not having much fun in here, which is tough. This is a great game. We're lucky to play it. And when you are expected to win and you want to win and it's not happening, it's tough and not fun, but that's why we're here."

"Just not going our way right now," pitcher Taijuan Walker added. "We're not executing. Just kind of in a rut. When you get in these ruts, it's hard to get out of sometimes. And right now we're just not getting out of it."

The Phillies held a 2-1 lead in the second inning before the Cubs tied the game thanks to a misplayed ball in center field by Justin Crawford and second baseman Edmundo Sosa. Philadelphia failed to get another run on the board for the rest of the game, and the team is now 0-9 this season against left-handed starting pitchers.

"I feel like we get one guy on base and then he kind of dies for whatever reason. And that's just not good enough," Turner said. "So maybe it's a little bit of approach."

It's not time to panic just yet, but the Phillies already trail the NL East-leading Atlanta Braves (17-8) by 8.5 games. Philadelphia will try to get back on track, starting with Thursday's series finale against Chicago (15-9).

"Baseball's a long season and we got a long way to go," manager Rob Thomson said. "And I think there's a lot of frustration here. But at the same time, these guys know that we got a talented group. Not much is going right for us right now. And at times we're not playing well. So we just got to stay after it and keep fighting. I mean, this is a talented group."
