Aaron Boone Contacted Carlos Mendoza amid Mets' Losing Streak, Yankees Manager Reveals in New Video
New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone bridged the Bronx Bombers' long rivalry with the New York Mets to assist one of his colleagues.
Boone told Foul Territory on Wednesday that he reached out directly to Mets manager Carlos Mendoza in part to "be supportive" amidst the Mets' 12-game losing streak. He called Mendoza "great people" and "a great manager."
The Mets skipper is certainly feeling the pressure as his team can't find a winning formula. On Tuesday night, a 3-0 lead turned into a 5-3 loss as star closer Devin Williams gave up a pair of runs in the ninth.
That defeat came after ESPN's Jeff Passan reported that Mendoza's job could be in jeopardy if New York's nine-game home stand "does not go well." Whether a managerial change is warranted, Passan said it's the easiest way to shake things up.
Juan Soto has been limited to eight appearances, though he's back in the lineup Wednesday. Francisco Lindor, Marcus Semien and Bo Bichette are all failing to deliver at the plate. Williams has a 9.95 ERA through 6.1 innings.
It's hard to blame all of that on the manager, but coaches are hired to be fired. That's true in any sport.
Boone is no stranger to hearing fans call for his job. That has been a common refrain in the Bronx for a few years. In that sense, he can relate to Mendoza's position.
His words of encouragement may not be all that helpful if Mendoza is actually given the boot, though.
