10 MLB Overreactions Worth Taking Seriously 😐
Wheeler hasn't pitched an MLB game since Aug. 2025 after being diagnosed with venous thoracic outlet syndrome.
The return of Wheeler is massive news for a Phillies team that has been extremely poor (8-14) to start the season. While the three-time All-Star won't help an underachieving offense (tied-27th with 76 runs scored), it will allow the Phillies to push Taijuan Walker (1-3 with a 9.16 ERA and 2.04 WHIP) out of the rotation.
In theory, a starting group comprised of Wheeler, Christopher Sánchez, Jesús Luzardo, Aaron Nola and promising young arm Andrew Painter should be among the best in baseball. While Luzardo and Nola have gotten off to slow starts and Painter has been inconsistent, the upside of the group is high.
Wheeler, 35, was very much in the NL Cy Young Award conversation last season before his diagnosis, going 10-5 in 24 starts with a 2.71 ERA, 0.93 WHIP and 195 strikeouts in 149.2 innings. He was beyond spectacular in June 2025, going 2-1 in five starts across the month with an 0.58 ERA and 42 strikeouts.
There have been questions in Philadelphia about whether the window has closed for the current core group of players, which have only amplified after the rough start. If Wheeler is dominant in his return and the starting rotation hits its ceiling, it will certainly provide a struggling lineup with a bit more margin for error.
The Phillies have dug themselves a big hole with their rough start, already trailing the Braves by 7.5 games in the NL East. Wheeler is the sort of player who can help them start digging their way out.
