The Mets Will Need to Make History to Qualify for 2026 MLB Playoffs, Here's Why
The New York Mets' postseason outlook isn't promising after the team suffered its ninth consecutive loss on Friday, falling 12-4 to the Chicago Cubs.
MLB.com's Anthony DiComo noted that only nine teams in MLB history have made the playoffs after going on a nine-game losing streak during the regular season.
The Mets fell to 7-13 on the season following Friday's loss, marking the worst record in the National League and the continuation of struggles that started during the second half of their 2025 campaign.
New York has scored just 69 total runs in 20 games this year, ranking No. 25 among all MLB teams.
Star shortstop Francisco Lindor has recorded one home run and one RBI in 20 games to open his 2025 season, compiling a .200/.297/.313 slash line.
Bo Bichette, who signed a three-year contract worth $126 million with the Mets this past offseason, is hitting .226 with one home run in his 20 appearances.
Meanwhile, four-time All-Star Juan Soto hasn't played since April 3 due to a calf injury.
Although New York still has 142 games to turn its season around, it'll need to make history in order to clinch a playoff berth.
