WWE Desperately Needs Sting to Increase Buzz for SummerSlam 2015

Tom ClarkAug 7, 2015

WWE SummerSlam is coming up on Sunday, August 23, and features The Undertaker vs. Brock Lesnar in the main event. There is no doubt that their combined drawing power should fuel the focus for fans, as this is the ultimate rematch.

But this match alone may not be big enough to provide the immense backdrop needed for a four-hour extravaganza. With just under three weeks left before SummerSlam, it's time for the company to up the star power, and Sting is one of the men who can bring it.

When buzz began online of The Deadman coming back for WWE's summer blowout, many fans likely believed Sting would be joining him on the card. After all, there are few icons left in WWE who still work, and even fewer have the marquee appeal Sting has.

Sting's last appearance on live WWE programming

Sting's presence at WrestleMania 31 was the realization of a career's worth of hard work. The former NWA and WCW champion spent his time in the business working for everyone but Vince McMahon, and Mania saw that finally change.

He came in and wrestled Triple H in a match that could have been the main event on any card on any given night. It was more than just a dream match; it was the meeting of two industry legends and a once-in-a-lifetime confrontation.

But it was an uncomfortable one as well.

Sting's loss in the end likely struck many fans the wrong way. Why was he brought in with all the fanfare WWE used, only to lose on the WrestleMania stage? Was it all about McMahon's desire to once again prove WWE's superiority over long-dead rival WCW?

Sting vs Triple H at WrestleMania 31

To say the end result left a bad taste in the mouths of fans is an understatement.

But that could all be corrected if Sting is used at SummerSlam. The dark vigilante would be a great addition to the card and would bring more eyes to the event, and that is always a positive for WWE. The only problem is, who does he work?

Which Superstar would have a reason to face Sting at SummerSlam? WWE does not have the top tier available to work Sting in such a high-profile match. He's already worked Hunter, Bray Wyatt is booked, and Seth Rollins will likely be facing John Cena for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship.

Where does that leave Sting?

WWE needs him at SummerSlam, but if it happens, he may not work a match. That means his appearance must be advertised, and it must happen as soon as possible for it to make a difference with the fans.

That appearance must come at the end of Wyatt and Luke Harper vs. Roman Reigns and Dean Ambrose. The Eater of Worlds is the next logical opponent for Sting, and this could be the best way to spark some heat between them.

Wyatt is accustomed to instigating his feuds, to targeting a guy and then stalking him for a month until he works a match against him. Mind games are used, sneak attacks come from out of nowhere, and every time his opponent tries to gain an advantage, Wyatt is one step ahead.

Sting is the only one in WWE who can get on Wyatt's level without fear of becoming consumed by it. He can outmaneuver, outplay and outwit Wyatt until the cult leader begins to feel the heat. A heel under that much pressure will make mistakes, and when that happens, Sting will be right there to pick up the win.

No matter how much Wyatt tries to best him, Sting will come out with the last laugh.

But their feud must begin at SummerSlam. If WWE wants to build the buzz this year, and especially if the goal is to promote a four-hour event, then Sting must be used. He will bring the attention and the star power as only he can.
